UK children are turning to fictional characters as their source of inspiration as a survey reveals that 30% of parents questioned say their children prefer them to actual celebrities.

Surprisingly, children are more influenced by characters in films, stories and on TV than real celebrities such as pop stars, footballers and politicians with boys more subjective than girls.

The survey looking at ‘children’s role models’ was conducted by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to mark the Blu-ray Triple Play release of The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The survey showed that 26% of children (particularly girls) look up to characters in stories, with 32% of parents wishing that their children would look up to such characters and 26% even encourage them to do so.

Parents thought that these fictional characters in TV, film and stories were a bigger instigator on kids than even their friends.

The majority of parents agreed that the stories they would most prefer their children to be influenced by were The Chronicles of Narnia, The Famous Five, Little Women and Winnie the Pooh.

In Fox’s latest DVD release, Reepicheep, the film’s small, yet courageous mouse serves as a positive role model to children showing that it doesn’t matter if you are tall or small; being brave and having a warm heart will prevail.
