Youngsters are now buying "sexist" lad magazines to learn about sex, OFSTED has apparently cautioned.

The Government watchdog disclosed yesterday that parental figures and educational establishments are not teaching children about the birds and the bees, resulting in teenage lads turning to problem pages on publications including Nuts and Zoo.

Ofsted is quoted as saying in the Mirror:"Magazines aimed at young men, while at times reinforcing sexist attitudes... remain a positive source of advice for many young people." The report - from 350 inspections - said school nurses are valuable in giving out morning-after pills and girls seldom discuss sex now with mums. Miriam Rosen, Ofsted's director of education, said: "No matter how difficult, parents and teachers have to discuss sensitive issues."

However Margaret Morrissey of the Parent Teacher Association commented that ladies mustn't go on the pill before having the blessing of their parents and showed their worries about lads' mags.

She added in the newspaper: "There's a difference between educating kids about sex and these magazines."
