Schools in England should be fined if pupils leave schools with poor literacy skills according to an independent report into the cause of last year’s riots.

The final report argues that a lack of support and opportunities for young people contributed to the outbreak of riots last summer.

Will Davies is co-founder of aspect.co.uk, London’s largest maintenance company and host of Britain’s first unemployment boot camp that took place in London yesterday. A number of applicants were put through the military style boot camp that included literacy and numeric tests.

Mr Davies has argued for a change in an education system that is too exam focused and fails to equip young people with the employable skills needed to grasp opportunities that arise.

“Teachers have become fixated on exam results and youngsters are getting results but they are weak in basic, employable skills.”
