With the Easter holidays on the horizon, parents are beginning to consider how best to entertain their children over the holidays and in the current economic climate, many will be letting their children watch movies and television and play online for much of it.
However, a new report released today by Netflix highlights how more and more children are accessing age restricted content when left alone by their parents.
The study asked children between the ages of 5 and 16 if they had ever watched age-restricted content and saw around one in five 11 and 12 year olds confessing they have watched an 18 rated film with more than half of 14 year olds having done so as well. In addition 5%, or more than 200,000 children, between the age of 5 and 10 have as well.
The report also brings to the fore the amount of time children are spending watching content online with the average child watching nearly 6 hours a week and spending two hours a day unsupervised in front of the television and despite 80% of parents being concerned, 60% admit to having watched adult themed content in the company of their children.
The report also highlights further fears parents have, with 75% admitting to feeling concerned with the amount of advertising their children are subjected to.
So what can parents do to ensure their children are not subjected to inappropriate content when left alone? With the launch of Just for Kids, the content channel aimed only at children, parents now have more control over what programmes their children watch online, ensuring parents don’t have to worry about the viewing habits of their children.
