Mother's Day on Female First

Mother’s Day has turned into ‘Mother’s Hour’ for most British mums, with the majority set to be back to doing the usual chores by 10am this Sunday - according to new research by leading online shopping outlet Littlewoods.com.

The survey of 2,000 British mums shows that, whilst Mother’s Day is meant to be the day when roles are reversed, this is far from the case.

For over half of British mums, Mother’s Day is as good as over by 10am as they have to resume their usual daily chores and ‘duties’ – with only 8% getting a full day off on Sunday. On top of this nearly 90% won’t manage to get a simple lie-in, while more than half won’t even receive a gift from their children and 81% will have to make their own breakfast.

What’s more, you can forget about the UK average working week being 42 hours, as more than one and a half million mums in the UK spend over 80 hours a week doing household chores; such as vacuuming, washing and cooking. Nearly half of mums believe that if they were to be paid for their work they should receive at least £10 an hour, the same as a chef, account manager, accountant or engineer, which is £14K more than the average UK yearly wage.

Gary Kibble, Brand Director at Littlewoods.com, commented on the findings, “The research is very surprising and I’m amazed that more than one and a half million mums spend more than 80 hours a week doing household chores. It just goes to show how much they do that goes unnoticed. Mother’s Day is supposed to be the one day of the year that mums are guaranteed a rest so we really hope that people break from the norm and allow them a full day of relaxation and pampering. I think we will all agree they more than deserve it!”

Top five tips to ensure mum has a great Mother’s Day:

1)   Let mum have a lie in

2)   Cook her breakfast in bed

3)   Don’t let her do the chores

4)   Get mum a thoughtful present

5)   Pamper her all day
