This summer, families with children could be doing a lot more than simply hitting the beach and enjoying the delights of ice creams and donkey rides!
A new survey has discovered Britons young and old like to feel they are doing something constructive in their own time, with 33% of us picking up activities through which we can learn something new.
Helena Spicer, Senior Leisure Analyst at Mintel states; "This latest research highlights the trend towards edutainment, the blending of learning and educational experiences with leisure."
So where does this passion for learning come from? Well apparently it's a technique that has gathered pace for some years, but is becoming increasingly important to us during the recession.
Whether it be learning new career skills, keeping ourselves busy during UK 'staycations' or simply trying something new to cheer ourselves up, the combination of learning and fun is having a positive effect during hard times.
Elizabeth Scott from 'About.com' says, "Hobbies and fun activities can bring added joy and happiness to life, and can be a great way to relieve stress as well." In fact, many adults take up learning as a coping mechanism for stress, which then turns out to be a great source of relaxation and enjoyment.
This may explain the new phenomenon for 'edutainment' amongst adults over the age of 35, who are looking for innovative ways to cope with the stress of the economic situation. But of course it's not just adults who need a release and can benefit from the combination of learning and fun.
Children between 8-15 years old are also indulging in edutainment, which can dramatically improve intelligence and happiness levels. "It's important for today's parents to remember that even our children (especially our children) need some 'down time' to explore their interests and the world," says Elizabeth Scott.
It is far easier for parents to 'edutain' their kids this year with the wealth of fantastic attractions and centres of learning across the country. Many museums, craft centres, leisure parks, galleries and education centres have stepped up their game and improved their facilities and activities in response to the fact that almost half of us will holiday at home this year.
Museums in particular are offering fun packed events and activity programmes on weekends, bank holidays and throughout the school holiday periods. There are hundreds all over the UK catering for a wide range of interests and tastes. From local history to modern art, dinosaurs to space rockets, there's something for everyone.
The 'Let's Go with the Children' printed guides and comprehensive website, offer a really easy way for parents to look for local opportunities to 'edutain' their kids, and blend learning with fun this summer.
