Preparing for exams can be just as harrowing for parents as it can for their children.
The urge to push your child to the best possible future can often lead to parental overkill and additional stress can actually end up damaging their exam results.
Craig Halsall, the Director of Education at Justin Craig Education, the market leader in Easter revision courses, recommends the following top tips for parents wishing to assist in their child’s revision
· Provide appropriate space at home in which exam revision can be undertaken in private. For example, provide plenty of shelf space for revision materials, especially text books and notes, and sufficient desk space to work with
· Strongly recommend short periods of revision absolutely not longer than 90 minutes without a break. (Breaks should be regular and plentiful throughout the day and most importantly enjoyed!)
· Make revision a normal event that occurs regularly in the house
· Communicate with other members of the family so that the personal space of the student remains quiet and books are not disturbed
·Be available / on hand to give help during the revision period if it is requested even if only moral support it all counts!
· Encourage revision to happen at opportunistic times remember effective revision does not always have to be planned out days or weeks in advance
· Actively encourage the display of key revision notes, posters and timetables around the house. For example, clear the family notice board and encourage your son or daughter to fill it with revision notes; do the same on the back of the bathroom door!
· Let the student revise with relaxing music, but not the television or other distractions
· Insist on plenty of sleep. It is an absolute priority that students go to bed at a sensible time
· Encourage nutritious food and especially find time to provide a very healthy breakfast
· Find time to listen to your son or daughter’s problems as this will help stop them from becoming too stressed
· Provide them with the option of professional support in the form of a revision course, like those offered by Justin Craig Education
