The internet now has thousands of social networking systems, aimed at teens and your children. Things such as chat rooms, msn, Facebook, Bebo and Myspace can all be happy, friendly places where kids can escape from school; however, there is the sad fact that anyone can access these places easily. Were on about; Paedophiles, perverts, etc.
You don’t want to be a spy by watching your child’s every move but you do want to make sure they’re safe and protected from strangers.
We have put together some top tips about things you can do, things to look out for and protecting your children.
Tell your children about the dangers and because of these you will be checking what sites they are on regularly for their safety. If your child suddenly starts acting secretive or different when you go in the room don’t ignore this changed behaviour there might be something going on you should be keeping an eye on.
If you concerned about what sites your child is visiting encourage them to list the websites they use in their favourites, that way you can check and be sure of what they are using.
Tell your child never to give out personal details on forums, etc. to give a false name. Make sure they know that no matter how much they think they can trust some one they have met online not to arrange to meet up with them.
Most internet packages have settings where you can put a parental block on the computers so you can ban chat rooms, pornographic sites etc, depending on the age of your child it may be worth doing this.
If your child uses Bebo, Facebook and Myspace or any other social networking sites insist that you can see what photographs they put up and approve them – again depending on their age. Insist that the only people they add or accept are people they know.
Make sure your child can come to you freely, without being scared, in confidence if they are ever worried or upset by the internet. Tell them it is important to make you aware of any problems before they get out of hand and that you won’t be angry if they go on an indecent site by accident as long as they let you know.
