After new research, U.S. paediatricians have suggested that young children who are at high risk of suffering from food allergies, asthma, eczema and other atopic diseases, could lower their chances or delay these if they are breastfed for a minimum of four months. The same benefits of breast feeding might also be conferred by using some types of infant formulas made without cow’s milk protein. Most of the hydrolyzed or hypoallergenic formulas are suitable.

January (08)’s edition of the journal ‘Pediatrics’, has revealed a statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that sits with this new report.

However there is insufficient evidence to support delaying the introduction of allergy related foods from the diets of high risk children e.g. Nuts, eggs, wheat and glucose, the report suggests. No evidence has proven that restricting your diet when pregnant will reduce the chances of your child forming an atopic disease.

There is enough evidence in this new policy to prove that breastfeeding for four months rather than using formula milk will decrease the risk of your child getting an allergy.
