I Wanna Be Your Man - the brand new single by DJ Ironik - sees the 20-year old north Londoner wearing his heart on his sleeve as he vies to win the affection of his first love. Produced by remixers du jour Agent X (Ne-Yo, Mariah Carey, Wiley, H Two O), I Wanna Be Your Man is the second single to be lifted from Ironikâs eagerly-anticipated set No Point In Wasting Tears. It follows the Top 5 success of debut single Stay With Me, which has sold over 125,000 copies to date, whilst capturing the attention of an entire generation.Â
Seamlessly straddling the line between R&B, grime, pop and hip-hop, I Wanna Be Your Man samples the Zapp and Roger classic I Want To Be Your Man (the original voice-boxed "chipmunked" vocal hit) - a track that has inspired numerous contemporary artists including Kanye West, Akon and Sean Kingston. It was Tupac and Dr Dre who first bought Zapp and the Troutmans to a younger generation of listeners with âCalifornia Loveâ. Troutman himself cleared Ironikâs sample of his classic, declaring "I love it! I couldnât have done a better or more creative job myself!"
Ironik has helmed a rich collective of young, talented musical contributors for the No Point In Wasting Tears LP, drawing together an inspiring pool of talent in black music, bringing to the fore some central figures such as: ultra-hot grime MC Chipmunk; producer Bless Beats; rapper Tinchy Stryder; godfather of Grime Wiley; and hugely gifted singers like Young Nate, Ny and Digga. No Point In Wasting Tears is the not-so-secret diary of a young man growing up in uncertain times. Its lyrical themes strike a chord with a generation, whilst its musical depth and sing-along choruses will appeal across the board.
Ironikâs professional career started at the tender age of 13, when he began DJ-ing regularly at his uncleâs Twice As Nice events. He progressed through pirate radio, production (e.g. Roll Deep), eventually becoming a consummate performer in his own right. For the last five years Ironik has toured constantly. After every show Ironik headed back to his bedroom and worked on his fanbase. Night after night he pushed his music out there, found fans, kept them close and found more. He knows his generation and he knows what they want from him. A gruelling schedule of no less than 200 gigs in the past year has enabled Ironik to build a widespread and loyal fanbase - indicated by his staggering 98,000+ Myspace friends and some 10 Million hits on Myspace, Bebo and Youtube channels. The internet has been around his entire life, he knows its topography, he understands it's flow. "I go there when I need to connect," says Ironik. Every new tune is fan-tested - he gets reactions back within minutes. "I know everything on this record is massive" he says. "It ainât even been decided by me, its all them." It's hard to argue with him - the uptake numbers for songs on No Point In Wasting Tears are incredible. Internet plays of unreleased titles like âSo Niceâ, â5 hrsâ, âSo Amazingâ and âBrokenâ run into the millions - breaking new ground for a debut act.
His star power was understood by the artists in his scene long before the industry - Wiley first recorded with him five years ago. "He's a hero and a friend," says Ironik. "People say Wiley doesn't take care of business, but it ain't true - he aint called Wiley for nothing. He helped bring me through."
Since writing âStay With Meâ a year ago, it has become the torch song for thousands across the country mourning the loss of loved ones, friends and relationships. Touted as the âAnthem for broken Britainâ by The Sun, what began as an underground internet sensation has gone over-ground, stacking up a raft of unparalleled statistics including four weeks on Radio 1âs A-List, Top 10 TV airplay and 4 million online plays of the official video.
The album, No Point In Wasting Tears, is out September 29th.
