Eureka, the third studio album from Canadian avante pop quintet Mother Mother, is the band’s most tenacious and undaunted record to date.
An eccentric, hook laden pop-meets-rock album, the tracks are housed in creative arrangements with clever lyrics and intricate harmonies.
The seemingly upbeat collection of songs still contains the signature dark lyrical tone of Mother Mother.
The Stand is the incredibly addictive lead off single, an urban hip hop tinged tale of a misanthrope who corrupts the minds of two young school girls.
The opening track, Chasing It Down, laments the demise of the newness in things, while wearing the skin of an epic, Deep Purple-esque rocker, complete with a formidable organ hook while Born In A Flash is a quintessential piano driven slow song which sees the bands style at its most haunting and morose.
True to its title, Simply Simple is a perfect advocacy of the 'less is more' doctrine, while the dreamy Getaway, with Molly Guldemond singing lead in her unique, gentle timbre, is the plight of an escapist.
Frontman Ryan Guldemond is the driving force behind this record, writing the majority of the material as well as producing it, which results in a far more organic sound to its predecessors and one Guldemond describes as "a vivid depiction of where the band's at right now, which is the height of our musicianship, song writing and strength as collaborators".
Verdict: 3/5
