We're Backing The Killers

We're Backing The Killers

Is it just me, or do you always like to look through award nominations and pick who you think should win in each category, then circle them and cheer your heads off for them on the night… no? Just me then.

Anyway as its no longer the season to be jolly, and now the season to inflate some famous people’s egos even further - yes it is possible! - FemaleFirst have decided to share with you who we think should be taking home a few of this year’s pretentious Indie kid gongs.

And the nominess are…

BEST BRITISH BAND supported by Shockwaves

Oasis / Bloc Party / Radiohead / Muse / Last Shadow Puppets

I’ve got to say, the nominees are a bit sexy this year, and to be honest, they all deserve to win the gong as each band have brought something a little bit delicious to the music scene. But as I am of the opinion that Oasis are one of the greatest British bands of all time, I’m going to have to plump for Liam Gallagher and friends.

BEST INTERNATIONAL BAND supported by 4music

Kings of Leon / The Killers / MGMT / Vampire Weekend / Chrystal Castles

We all love a bit of foreign meat in the FemaleFirst office, and Kings Of Leon and The Killers have seen sexing up our stereo over and over again for the past few months.

Although their hits have been slightly overplayed that they make us want to pull our ears off now, I am happy to inform you that we are putting our ‘X’ in the box of Brandon Flowers and friends - that’s The Killer’s to those of you who are not down with the indie kids.

BEST SOLO ARTIST

Lady Hawke / Jay-Z / Laura Marling / Lightspeed Champion / Pete Doherty

What NME readers are doing venturing into the world of Jay-Z I’ll never know… it’s almost as bizarre as Pete Doherty making a comeback under the name Peter Doherty (like that’s going to make him look like any less of a heroin addict!)

But for pure comedy genius, and perhaps even a typo on whoever wrote these nominations, maybe thinking they were making the MOBO shortlist, we vote for Jay-Z… he’s got 99 problems, and it seems that NME might be one.

BEST LIVE BAND supported by Red Stripe

Radiohead / Oasis / The Killers / Muse / Kings Of Leon

Although I’ve never actually seen any of these live, yeah yeah, I know, shame on me, I’m going to hell, I don’t deserve to pick a winner… yeah. Save it. I have been informed by my favourite little oversized neon sunglasses wearing friend that Muse are by far the best live act she has ever seen.. Therefore deserve to take home this years gong. I think she’s just saying that to get into Matt Bellamy.. But then again who wouldn’t?

BEST ALBUM supported by HMV

Kings Of Leon / The Killers / Glasvegas / Oasis / Bloc Party

Now then, I have all these albums sitting on my desk smiling up at me, and I feel really guilty having to pick one of them to take home a sexy prize, so I’m going to turn them over so that they can’t see who I vote for… hold on.

Okay, now, each album has it’s own little slice of ear-filling pleasure… and of course Kings Of Leon has Caleb Follwill, but we’re talking about the music now for sure, and despite the fact that Dig Out Your Soul is my least favourite Oasis album to date it has to be the best ‘comeback’ of 2008. So purely on that basis… oh and that they founded the Indie scene… they once again get our vote.

BEST TRACK supported by NME Radio

Vampire Weekend - A-Punk / Last shadow Puppets - Age Of The Understanding / Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire / The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name / MGMT - Time To Pretend

Now now, this is a pretty hard one, because as I’m sure you will agree, my little lungs have been belting out these songs for the past month or two; yet recently they have started to become played into oblivion and you find yourself reaching for earplugs.

However, if we were asked to choose the song which has had the most impact on us, therefore becoming the Best Track in our opinion, it would have to be The Ting Tings. I personally really dislike the ‘lets ‘sing’ in our broadest accent ever’ approach to music.. But I concede that it did well.

BEST TV

Skins / Mighty Boosh / Gavin & Stacey / Nevermind the Buzz cocks / IT Crowd

I’ve got to admit that I love all of these shows, and our Sky+ goes mental when I add yet another series link to it, but despite the massive success of The Mighty Boosh over recent years - including hosting their own festival I know that it is another show that the current indie scene wants to be like.

Let me firstly point out that I’m by no means inferring that all NME readers are hardcore drug addicts who go out raving every weekend, but come on, Skins is like the bible of all things ‘cool.’ So many people crave that “I don’t give a shit” attitude that the characters expel from every pore. So therefore Effy and friends get our vote.

HERO OF THE YEAR

Brandon Flowers / Noel Gallagher / Barack Obama / Noel Fielding / Alex Turner

Just what is going on with NME this year, like seriously, what has Barack Obama brought to the readers of NME? Although I guess the same could be said for Alex Turner. Ouch!

Anyway, Brandon Flowers only proved that his fashion sense had taken a nose dive this year and Noel Fielding hasn’t really done that much… so I suppose getting himself elected as the new President of the USA makes him slightly more of a hero than the other nominees.

VILLAIN OF THE YEAR

Amy Winehouse / George Bush / Pete Doherty / John McCain / Gordon Brown

What is it with NME and their foray into politics? Crikey, we’re going to be reading the Economist next, okay, we’ll never sink to that level, but yes, John McCain didn’t really do anything too bad, and Gordon Brown saved us from Tony Blair, so that’s got to be good right?

I’d say that despite Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty becoming the best advertisements heroin and cocaine have ever seen, George Bush might just be a little worse than them after waging war on a country for no real reason. You win some you lose some eh George?

FemaleFirst - Ruth Harrison
