Taylor Swift, Nominee For 5 Awards
Here we are at awards season once again, and we come to the ultimate contrast. The MTV VMAs and EMAs compared to the Mercury Music Prize.
The cream of the UK music scene goes up against MTV’s massive popularity contest.
By the way, this isn’t a rant against mainstream awards as such; these big artists deserve their prizes too. The MTV series of awards though are becoming a parody even of themselves.
While the nominations themselves are just predictable and based more off chart performance than anything else, two of the award categories are simply a joke.
‘Best Look’ and ‘Biggest Fans’? These aren’t anything to do with the artists themselves. You might even be able to justify Best Look by saying that the singer is a whole stylistic package, but the fans category is just ridiculous.
It’s will simply end up with a shouting match between One Direction fans and Justin Beiber supporters, and giving one a trophy will just make this weird little flame war even worse. Why the two camps of fans fight, heaven knows.
Even the laughably terrible MTV Movie Awards don’t go to those torrid depths.
The mere inclusion of the category is just another example of how these awards are just window dressing now, even compared to major shindigs like The Brits and The Grammys.
While the awards will mean something to the winners (who doesn’t like a big shiny prize after all), particularly those picking up the regional awards, the outside world and us bunch of snobby media types won’t really care who picked up the awards.
So, if MTV are going all out bonkers, at least do one thing right and let Gangnam Style win Best Video.
