Yet another new band emerges from Manchester with dreams of being different and shaking things up a bit; Kid British join the long list that already includes the likes of Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Happy Mondays – you know what I’m talking about. A playful mixture of Ska, street poetry and pop, these boys are without a doubt set to soundtrack the summer.
Sunny Days, the band’s debut single proper, is the first track to be taken from the album It Was This Or Football which is due for release on June 29. An instant reminder of ELO classic Mr. Blue Sky and characterised by the reggae fusion and horny stomp of The Specials, Sunny Days is musically upbeat and ear-friendly while the underlying message has an air of sadness about it.
At times, lyrically, you’ll probably feel slightly embarrassed singing along with lines like “You’re the thing that I think about most, looks like it’s just me, my beans and toast” giving a slight whiff of the mundane. That said though, it’s jazzy, vibrant and possibly the most infectious tune of the year so far. It’s shameless summer pop with a spring in its step and a pork pie hat on top.
