Over the last few years, Marvel has dominated the box office and really is the leaders when it comes to the superhero film. No summer is complete without a summer release, and this blockbuster season we going to be introduced to Guardians of the Galaxy.
So far, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Avengers have all hit the big screen providing us with some terrific movie moments. We take a look at some of the best from Phase One and Phase Two of Marvel films. POTENTIAL SPOILERS
- Avengers Prepare For Battle - Avenges Assemble (2012)
Avengers Assemble hit the big screen in 2012, and saw Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, and Hawkeye together in the same film for the first time… needless to say, they don’t all get along to start off with.
This clash of egos forces to tear the Avengers apart before they have even come together, as they spend most of their time warring with each other rather than focusing on the threat posted by Loki and the Tesseract.
However, with the invasion of New York and the possible destruction of the planet the Avengers come together and fight as a team for the first time. This scene sees the birth of the Avengers, who stand together and project the planet from evil.
- Iron Man’s First Flight - Iron Man (2008)
Iron Man really kicked of the marvel Universe back in 2008, as we were introduced to Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark for the first time - which really was a genius piece of casting, if I do say so myself. He really could never be re-cast.
After escaping from the Ten Rings - a group that held him captive - Stark sees the error of his ways, and chooses to defend the planet rather than make weapons that destroy it. He set out to work on his first Iron Man suit.
Once of the movie’s best moments comes as Stark suits up and takes his first flight as Iron Man for the first time - after he has dealt with the ‘icing problem’ Stark is ready for action and to defend the plant from evil… and he is called upon to fulfil that role a little sooner than expected.
- Meet Captain America - Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Steve Rodgers is just a weedy kid who believes he has just as much right as anyone else to fight for his country during the Second World War. While he may have been overlooked by the military, Dr Erskine sees something special in him: he may be a weak man, but he is a good man with a big and noble heart.
Rodgers is given the chance to serve his country as he become lab rat #1 for Erskine’s Super Soldier Serum - a serum that will make him the first in a new breed of solider for the American army.
When Rodgers steps into the experiment as a weak and rather weedy man, and comes out taller, bigger, faster, stronger, and ready to take on the enemy. Captain America is born!!!
- Black Widow Interrogation - Avengers Assemble (2012)
We are introduced to the character of Black Widow for the first time back in Iron Man 2, but it is Avengers Assemble where we really get to know her and where she becomes an integral part of the Marvel universe.
Black Widow is the first of the Avengers that we meet in the movie as she is being ‘interrogated’. However, it is a reverse interrogation, and Romanoff is getting all of the information that she needs from them.
However, when se receives word that Hawkeye has been captured by Loki, we see the interrogation come to a swift end as Black Widow goes into action. This opening sequence really is one of the best fight scenes in the film, and shows what an exciting character that Black Widow is - really hope we will be seeing a solo film.
- Thor Back In Action - Thor (2011)
We were introduced to the character of Thor for the first time back in 2011, and Thor was the role that made Chris Hemsworth a star.
To be frank, Thor is perhaps the nicest character in the world when we meet him at the beginning of the film. After a fallout with this father and banishment to earth, Thor begins to see the error of his ways, and begins to turn into the man and the King that his father hopes that he will be.
As Thor sacrifices himself when fighting the Destroyer, shows that he is once again worthy of wielding Mjolnir, his powers are restored and our hero returns to face down Loki and stop his evil plan. It also gives Jane Foster to see Thor as he really is for the first time: more than just a man.
- Nick Fury Dies - Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Nick Fury is a character who has appeared in many of the Marvel movies - you have to scroll past the credits in Iron Man and Thor to catch a glimpse of him - and yet he remains somewhat of a mystery.
We saw the biggest role for Nick Fury come earlier this year with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as Samuel L. Jackson returns to this terrific role.
However, things do not go well for Fury, as he comes off second best when he comes face to face with the Winter Soldier - the spectacular car chase is one of the film’s most exciting moments. But is this the final goodbye for this popular character?
- First Look At Asgard - Thor (2011)
When Thor hit the big screen, it was Marvel’s most adventurous film to date, as it took us of Earth and introduced us to the Asgard for the first time.
Creating this new world was the biggest task facing the director Kenneth Branagh and the special effects team behind the film - so often we see ‘other worlds’ look a bit naff when you see them on film.
Not this time around. We are introduced to Asgard in the opening few scenes of the film, and it really is a world that you want to explore further - which is something we do get the chance to do in Thor: The Dark World.
- Hulk vs. Loki - Avengers: Assemble (2012)
When Avengers: Assemble hit the big screen we saw Mark Ruffalo take over the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk for the first time. This time around, director Joss Whedon used motion capture to bring Hulk to life. This is a technique that allows us to see more of Ruffalo in the character and the actor to truly give a performance.
Hulk has many terrific movies in the film, from chasing Black Widow and fighting with Hulk on the Helicarrier, to punching Thor during the battle of New York.
However, Hulk’s finest moment is when he comes face to face with Loki in Stark Tower, and shows exactly what he thinks of him… ‘puny god!!’
We are hoping for some ore great Marvel moments in Guardians of the Galaxy, which is released 31st July.
