After already revealing that fans will be surprised by the third entry into the Guardians of the Galaxy film series, director James Gunn has now opened up a little more about what to expect and, confirmed that this will be the final outing for the team as we know it.

Speaking on Deadline's Hero Nation podcast, in a discussion about his HBO Max series Peacemaker, the filmmaker also touched on how he was getting along with the third - and final chapter - in his Guardians story.

He explained: “This is the end for us. This is the last time people will see this team of Guardians... I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story and I want to give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. So that is always a little bit scary; I'm doing my best.”

Now, this of course doesn’t mean we’re never going to see this cast on the big screen as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe again; it simply means that the team who have come together to fight against some of the universe’s biggest threats likely won’t be doing so anymore.

Instead, we’ll probably see them cropping up in other films that are a part of the MCU, individually and scattered, so as to keep the legacy of their characters alive.

It also doesn’t mean that the Guardians of the Galaxy series will be forever gone from cinema. What we’ll likely see is a new team assembled, with perhaps one or two familiar faces making a return alongside a fresh crew.

Exactly who that crew will be remains to be seen, but with a wealth of comic book canon to pull from, there are plenty of options.

What many people don’t realise is that Star-Lord wasn’t the original leader of the Guardians, but actually a character who joined the team many decades after its initial formation. Though he was introduced to comic book fans in January 1976, it wouldn’t be until 2008, when Guardians of the Galaxy was relaunched, that he would become the pack’s frontman.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to hit cinemas in May 2023. We’ll bring you further updates as and when we get them.
