At 23-years-old, Timothée Chalamet has quickly become one of Hollywood’s finest young actors. His professional acting career began at LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts in New York, where he won roles on TV shows such as Law & Order and Homeland. He then moved into indie cinema, choosing projects wisely and gaining critical acclaim in films such as Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird.

His upcoming film Beautiful Boy is the heart-breaking story of a promising teenager who suffers from addiction and whose family rallies around to help in any way they can. To celebrate the film’s release this week, we take a look at his impressive performances so far…

Men, Women & Children (2014)

Men, Women & Children is an American drama which follows a group of teenagers and their parents as they approach and navigate the internet differently. The internet has changed all their lives by altering how they communicate, how they view themselves and others, and has even changed how their relationships and love lives work. Timothée Chalamet shined in a relatively small role as a high school football player, but this charming indie flick set him on the path to stardom.

Interstellar (2014)

Set in the near future, Earth is on its way to being uninhabitable. In a last-ditch attempt for survival, NASA decide to send former pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers into space in an attempt save humanity by transferring the population to a new home through a wormhole. Timothée Chalamet plays Cooper’s son, who’s talent for farming make him a valuable asset for the planet. He agrees to help his grandfather (John Lithgow) run the farm and look after his younger sister Murph (Mackenzie Foy) while Cooper is away. And hopes that one day he will return.

Set in Italy 1983, 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) is spending the summer with his family in their villa. Each year his father invites a young research assistant to help him with his work so an American student called Oliver (Armie Hammer) arrives. Initially Elio finds him obnoxious but over the weeks they form a relationship that neither of them was expecting but which changes their lives forever. This indie romance was Chalamet’s first lead role, and one which received great critical acclaim. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the role, becoming the second youngest actor ever to do so.

Lady Bird (2017)

Lady Bird is a coming-of-age drama which follows 17-year-old Christine (Saoirse Ronan) who prefers to be referred to as “Lady Bird”. Lady Bird longs to attend a prestigious school in a different city as she feels like her home, Sacramento, has no culture or adventure. The film follows her struggles in senior year, her first romance, branching out into the dramatic society and her college applications. Timothée Chalamet plays Kyle, a pretentious young musician who charms a naïve Lady Bird as she searches for her identity. This role helped showcase Chalamet’s versatility as an actor and director Greta Gerwig was so impressed with his performance that she cast him in her upcoming film Little Women, opposite Saoirse Ronan once again.

Beautiful Boy (2018)

Beautiful Boy is based on a collection of best-selling memoirs written by a father and son, outlining their experiences with addiction and how they dealt with it within their family. Timothée Chalamet plays Nic Sheff, a teenager who becomes reliant on drugs and his subsequent struggle with recovery as his father David (Steve Carell) tries everything possible to help him. The film is a stark and raw look at the frustrating nature of addiction and how it not only affects the individual, but those close to them.

Beautiful Boy comes to cinemas across the UK on Friday, January 18, 2019.
