This cinema delight follows the tale of Oscar, a loveable young chimpanzee who finds himself alone in the forest after being separated from his mother.
In celebration of Chimpanzee, we invite you to #MeetOscar and the rest of our favourite movie primates. These playful fellows and Hollywood have a long and famous history as we highlight the very best as they monkey around!
- Chimpanzee
This Disneynature film may just feature the cutest primate of all time. Chimpanzee follows the story of Oscar, a young chimpanzee who becomes separated from his mother.
Filmmakers witnessed a miracle of nature as an alpha male took Oscar under his wing to raise him as his own.
This nature film is a true story, based on four years of footage that was shot in the chimpanzees’ natural habitat.
This will be the most adorable cinema release of the year, once you’ve met Oscar you’ll never forget him!
- Project Nim
Project Nim was one of the best documentary movies to hit the big screen in 2011 as James Marsh brought this incredible true story to life.
Project Nim follows the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child.
Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human.
Marsh delivered a movie that was moving and, at times, totally heart wrenching that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled - I defy you not to shed a tear when you watch it.
Marsh blends well dramatised shots with authentic home movies and it’s made seamless by some really great editing - it really is a very stylish looking movie.
- King Kong
You can't talk about primates on the big screen without talking about King Kong.
The film has been brought to the big screen a few times over the yeas - from the classic 1933 black and white film to Peter Jackson's visual spectacular.
The movie follows Anne Darrow who strikes up a relationship with a gorilla after she is offered to him as a sacrifice.
King Kong made his movie debut in 1933 in the ground breaking film that used pioneering special effects of stop motion models and animatronics.
By 2005 they brought King Kong to life by using stop motion animation - Andy Serkis was behind the character.
King Kong remains the greatest ape movie of all time as it is a film that has real heart.
- Jungle Book
'Well oobee-dooh, we wanna be like you-ooh-ooh.' is one of the most iconic lines from a Disney movie of all time from King Louie of the Apes.
I Wan'na Be Like You is a great musical number as Lowie showed that he was a musical maestro of the jungle as well as being a master of the finger trumpet and even excelled at being a monkey beatbox.
Jungle Book was released back in 1967 and yet it remains one of the greatest Disney movies of all time as it was packed full of colourful characters and great musical numbers.
- Gorillas In The Mist
In 1988 Gorillas In The Mist hit the big screen as Michael Apted directed the true story of naturalist Dian Fossey.
