With 2021 in its final month, many of us are turning our attention to the content being released next year, in 2022. Among some of the potential greats is what looks to be an extremely unique film called Petrov’s Flu, which will be gracing the big screen in February.
Sovereign, a company that releases auteur-driven features in the UK, has announced the upcoming release of controversial Russian director, Kirill Serebrennikov’s Cannes Film Festival prize-winning film in the UK.
The movie is set to be a deadpan, hallucinatory journey through post-Soviet Russia, based on the novel, The Petrovs In and Around the Flu by Alexey Salnikov. It focuses on an extraordinary day in the life of a comic book artist and his family and, saying much more would spoil the surprises that lay in wait.
Petrov’s Flu won the CTS Artist award at this year’s (2021) Cannes Film festival for Vladislav Opelyants' incredible cinematography; it was also chosen to play in the ‘Dare’ section of this year’s BFI (British Film Industry) London Film Festival.
Serebrennikov wrote Petrov’s Flu when he was under house arrest in Russia, which has led to a crazy, brutal and aggressive experience that appears to showcase shock, terror, and emotion, all the while being a visually impressive piece of cinema that will appeal to fans of many genres, from sci-fi to provocative arthouse.
Petrov’s Flu promises to be an oddly unique and wild ride into the darkness of the soul, with random acts of madness flooding the feature, as well as aliens, demonic librarians, and the dangers of public transport.
The upcoming movie has already received some mighty praise, with The Hollywood Reporter describing the film as ‘Skilfully executed and mesmeric’. Variety called the piece ‘Exhilarating’ and, The Wrap claimed it to be ‘A formidable piece of filmmaking’.
Petrov’s Flu will be in cinemas on February 11th, 2022 in the UK.
