Netflix are definitely stepping up their game this year, with more and more content being added to the popular streaming service. This December (2021) will see Don’t Look Up arrive on the platform; a doomsday film with a stellar cast.
Don’t Look Up stars two of Hollywood’s most talented and adored actors. Jennifer Lawrence is known for her hilarious personality, as well as her performance in The Hunger Games franchise, among other movies such as the X-Men Franchise and Silver Linings Playbook (2012).
Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most iconic actors in the entertainment business today. His role in Titanic (1997) essentially put him on the map, and has since starred in movies such as Inception (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and The Revenant (2015), which earned him his first Oscar.
Don’t Look Up follows Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio), who make a sensational discovery which reveals a comet orbiting within the solar system.
The problem is that it’s on a straight course for planet Earth; the other issue, is that nobody appears to care...
The scientific duo assumes the planet-killer heading towards them to be the size of Mount Everest, shrouding them with panic and worry.
Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), however, is on hand to help, so Kate and Randall begin their journey to save the world, one that takes them to the office of unbothered President Orlean (Meryl Streep), and her brownnosing son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill).
The pair also make their way onto The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry).
With just six months until the mountain-sized comet crashes into their planet, Kate and Randall have the whole world’s lives in their hands, a responsibility no one wants.
Managing the 24-hour news cycle and obtaining the attention of a social media obsessed population before the world ends may prove surprisingly comical; what will it take for the world to simply look up?
Don’t Look Up also stars Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, with Michael Chiklis and Tomer Sisley.
Despite the seriousness the plot may boast, the trailer actually shows the film to be a rather amusing look at the end of the world.
While Kate and Randall try to prove the Earth is in danger, no one bats an eyelid and it seems as though this is a disaster movie with a weighty narrative, but with comedy and humour weaved in; Don’t Look Up could be a breath of fresh air and originality.
Don’t Look Up will be in cinemas on December 10th, 2021 and will arrive on Netflix on December 24th (2021).
