This week (December 9th, 2019) saw the release of the very first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife; an official sequel to the original 1984 movie and its 1989 follow-up. Ignoring the events of the all-female 2016 reboot entirely, it'll introduce a whole bunch of new characters, whilst also bringing back some familiar faces. Check out the teaser below:

Director and producer duo Jason and Ivan Reitman are giving the spotlight to the series' new additions with this first look trailer, not offering a look at any of the original cast who are set to return. Instead, they tease the story - written by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan - which sees a family move to a small town, before discovering their connection to the original Ghostbusters.

Carrie Coon plays the mother of the family, with McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard taking on the roles of her children, who work alongside their teacher (played by Paul Rudd) to unearth the secret legacy left behind by their grandfather.

We learn that their late relative was Dr Egon Spengler - played in the original two films by the late Harold Ramis - but as they move into the home he left behind, they bring much more than just memories of his time back from the depths of history...

Whilst the original squad aren't seen, aside from some archive footage from the first film, we know that Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will be returning in some capacity. For now however, filmmakers are allowing the newcomers to shine. There was one big return, however...

Ecto-1 made its rip-roaring return, blasting through golden fields, as can be seen in the new poster below:

Without the addition of the original theme song, this should serve as just enough to whet the appetites of fans who were hoping for a dose of nostalgia with this trailer's release. If the reaction on social media is anything to go by, filmmakers made the perfect choice, giving a little to receive a lot.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the team who have worked on Afterlife will promote the film moving forward. Exactly when we get to see the originals make their comeback, and who will be serving as antagonists, is still up in the air. To this point however, they've played it perfectly.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife comes to cinemas across the UK in summer 2020.
