Fast & Furious 6 has blown away the competition at the U.S. box office this weekend as it has raced to the #1 spot.

The movie, which comes over a decade after the first, took $98.5 million in what was a bumper weekend for the film.

The Vin Diesel lead movie went head to head with comedy The Hangover Part III and comfortably saw off the competition.

A seventh film in the popular franchise is set to begin filming later this year with Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson on board.

The Hangover Part III sees the comedy franchise come to a close but it had to settle for second as it took $42.4 million.

Former number one Star Trek Into Darkness slipped two places this week as it was down at three. It enjoyed another very successful weekend at it took $38 million.

Epic was the third and final new entry on the chart this week as the animation movie opened at number four.

The movie is the latest offering from Blue Sky animations who have brought us the likes of Ice Age and Rio.

Iron Man 3 fell three places to five while The Great Gatsby was also down three places at six.

Mud was the only climber on the chart this week as it was up a place at seven while biopic 42 was down two at eight.

The Croods was the biggest faller as it was down four at nine while Oblivion was a three place faller at ten.
