Warning: Spoilers!
The Fast and Furious franchise has been going since 2001, and this year (2021) is the 10-year anniversary. The movies are still widely popular, and the overall feel of the films seems to have shifted less towards the cars, and more towards unlikely stunts and fighting scenes.
Despite the changes, fans still show their excitement online. This year, a ninth film will be released and even if you’re not interested in the storyline anymore, it’s still set to be an action-packed, explosive sequel.
In the previous film, Fast and Furious 8 (2017), Cipher (Charlize Theron) was our main villain. She coerced Dom (Vin Diesel) into doing the one thing no one ever thought he’d do – betray his family.
Cipher shows up in Cuba at the start of the film, knowing that’s where Dom would be. He and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are on vacation and Cipher is there to ruin it completely.
She shows Dom a photo on her phone, and his face drops. That’s his reason for betraying everyone he loves - spoiler alert - Dom had a son he didn’t know about with Elena (Elsa Pataky).
So for the whole film, Dom battles his friends to save his son, and just as Cipher is about to be caught while she’s on her plane where her base of operations lies, she jumps out of the plane and parachutes to safety.
That’s the link between the eighth and ninth instalments. However, that’s not the only thing that will get fans interested – the trailer for Fast and Furious 9 shows that Dom has a long lost brother - Jakob (John Cena).
Jakob, in the words of Roman (Tyrese Gibson), is a ‘master thief, an assassin,’ and ‘high performance driver,’ so the team seem to be up against a challenging opponent.
Dom and his crew face off against his brother, but as these types of films go, we can assume that they will probably join forces towards the end to battle a bigger foe. Or, perhaps Dom and Cipher will settle their differences, as she is seen saving Dom and Letty from a high fall by using a fighter jet in the trailer.
Not only will we a see a new member of the Toretto family, but we will also be seeing old faces, too.
In the new instalment, it appears that Jordana Brewster will be reprising her role as Dom’s sister Mia, and in one frame of the trailer, we see Shaun Boswell (Lucas Black) from The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift pop his head in, looking rather amused.
Another cast member we will be seeing is Han (Sung Kang). However, in The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, Han dies. He is in a crashed car as is blows up, thanks to Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), as revealed in the seventh movie.
So, while the eighth film didn’t leave fans with many unanswered questions, the trailer for Fast and Furious 9 throws so much at you that you’re bound to have questions like; How is Han alive? Why is Mia involved? And why does Cipher appear to be seen saving Dom while flying a fighter jet?
The film’s stunts and tricks may border on ridiculous, but the franchise has being going 20 years and it will not be stepping back from the unbelievable action sequences as that is what these movies are about.
Fast and Furious 9 is set to hit cinemas in the UK on July 8th – however this may change from cinemas to streaming services due to the current pandemic, and the movie could also be pushed back again due to these circumstances.
