DreamWorks Animation, under the stewardship of new owners Universal Pictures, has confirmed that production on the movie has been stopped completely, following it being initially postponed from 2017 to 2018.

However, there is a chance the characters from the children's movie could be resurrected at a later date.

A source told Variety: "The Croods' is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It's not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future."

The film - which originally debuted in 2013 - became a box office smash with earnings of $587 million worldwide and a TV spin-off followed on Netflix.

The animated movie followed a cave family led by patriarch Grug Crood (Nicolas Cage) who have to escape an earthquake.

Plans for the now-canned sequel would have reunited the former voice cast members such as Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Cage and Catherine Keener as well as writers and directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders.

Despite the decision being finalised by Universal, it has been reported that individuals at both DreamWorks and Universal insisted that it wasn't the change-up at Universal in April 2015 that finalised the decision and suggested that doubts had already been raised about proceeding with 'Croods 2' even before Universal was put in charge.
