This year (2022) is bringing some brilliant releases to cinemas. Among bigger titles like Thor: Love and Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick, there are also more independent films are breaking through, including an all-new romantic comedy...
Bergman Island is the newest release from theatrical distributor MUBI. They have released not only two posters for the upcoming feature, but a full-length trailer, too.
The film marks the English-language debut from Mia Hansen-Love and, will be released into cinemas early next month (June, 2022), before being available to stream on MUBI in July, 2022.
Bergman Island comes from filmmaker Hansen-Love (Things to Come, Eden), and is set to be a charming, bittersweet adventure set on the stunning island of Fårö, where filmmaker Ingmar Bergman lived, and worked, for over four decades.
Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth) are both filmmakers, and hope to find inspiration for their next projects as they travel to the Swedish island of Fårö to work on their screenplays and, hopefully, have a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Amy (Mia Wasikowska) and Joseph (Anders Danielsen Lie), two former lovers, are staying in the same island for wedding celebrations of a mutual friend.
As the summer season goes on, the fine lines between reality and fiction become harder to differentiate between, as reminders of Bergman’s legacy influences both duo’s stories.
The upcoming feature is set to be a mixture between fictional and auto-biographical; Hansen-Love's next title will see mystery, elegance, love, memory, and the journey of the creative process itself.
Bergman Island premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or, before having its North American Premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, and then its UK Premiere at the 2021 BFI London Film Festival, where it received widespread praise.
Bergman Island will release into UK and Irish cinemas on June 3rd, 2022, and will stream on MUBI from 22nd July, 2022.
