The Social Network

The Social Network has seen off rough competition from RED to take the top spot at the Australian box office.

The Social network is the latest movie from David Fincher, the man behind Zodiac and Fight Club, and tell the story of how Facebook was created.

It has already topped the box office in the U.S. and the movie took over $2.56 million in it's opening weekend to become number one.

RED, which brings together an impressive cast of Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman, had to settle from second as it took $1.7 million since it's release.

Last week's number one Paranormal Activity 2 dropped two place to three while Life As We Know It was also down two at number four.

The third new entry inside the top five came in the form of Saw 3D, which has topped the box office on both sides of the Atlantic.

This is the final chapter in the long running horror series but the movie failed to hit the $1 million mark this weekend.

The Town, Eat Pray Love and Resident Evil: Afterlife all dropped three place to finish at six, seven and eight. The final new entry, which was Made In Dagenham, was in at nine.
