New Year's Eve ended the three week reign of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 as it topped the U.S. box office.
But it was a disappointing gross of $13.7 million compared to the $56.2 million that Valentine's Day made in it's opening weekend last year.
Directed by Garry Marshall the movie follows the lives of several couples and singles in New York intertwine over the course of New Year's Eve.
The Sitter was also a new entry at number two as it took $10 million in it's opening weekend to take second spot.
The movie marks the return to the big screen of Jonah Hill after finding success in Moneyball earlier this autumn.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 fell two places to number three after three weeks in the top spot.
The Muppets were also down two places at number four while Arthur Christmas fell just a single place to round off the top five.
Hugo was one of the biggest faller this week as it dropped three places from three to six while The Descendants stayed put at seven.
Happy Feet and Jack and Jill were the two other three place fallers as they finished at eight and nine.
Immortals rounded off the top ten having fallen two places from last week's number eight.
