With less than 24 hours to go until 2019 dawns, we've taken a look back at some of the best films to take place around New Year's Eve.

For many, tonight (December 31) is one of the most exciting nights of the year. It's an excuse to let our hair down for one last time before we step into an all-new 12 months, get glammed up and hit the dance floor for a boogie.

There are those of us however, who would prefer to spend NYE curled up on the sofa with a blanket and a great movie. With that in mind, why not try one of these out for size if you haven't watched before? They're all great fun!

Here are seven New Year's Eve movies you need to watch.

7) Trading Places

This 1983 comedy brings together the brilliant Eddie Murphy as hustler Billy Ray Valentine; and Dan Aykroyd as snobby executive Louis WInthorpe III, in what is best-described as one of the funniest films of the 80s.

There's nothing groundbreaking about the comedy woven throughout this flick, but it's the sort of silly stuff that will keep you chuckling from start to finish without allowing your attention to wane.

Framed by successful sibling brokers Mortimer and Randolph Duke, played by Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy respectively, Winthorpe is taken in by the authorities, but finds a friend in the street-smart Valentine who is willing to help him turn the tables.

Directed by John Landis from a screenplay by Herschel Weingrod and Timothy Harris, there's a huge part of the plot which takes place on New Year's Eve, but saying too much would spoil it for new audiences! Check it out and you'll know exactly what we're talking about.

6) Bridget Jones's Diary

We're not sure a person exists on the planet who hasn't yet seen the brilliant Bridget Jones's Diary, but just in case, we couldn't leave the hilarious comedy off of our list!

Unlucky in love and wondering how she got to this stage in her life, Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is a woman who's stuck in a rut. Following an encounter at a New Year party hosted by her parents with the handsome Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), she decides it's time to turn her life around in a bid to finally find her Mr. Right.

All many of us want in this life is love, and so Bridget is one of the most relatable and personable characters in cinematic history. She's down-to-earth, realistic and has a whole flurry of flaws, but that's all part of humanising her so that the audience can root for her.

Once you're done with the original, there are a pair of sequels which are just as funny for you to make your way through! Perhaps a Bridget Jones trilogy night is exactly what your New Year's Eve should be made of?

5) Poseidon

There are three film adaptations of Paul Gallico's novel The Poseidon Adventure, but the 1972 flick and the 2006 loose remake are the pair you should check out.

The latest movie stars the likes of Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum and Mike Vogel, as well as Josh Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, Jacinda Barrett, Jimmy Bennett, Mía Maestro and Freddy Rodriguez.

Taking place on luxury ocean liner - the RMS Poseidon - the passengers enjoy a New Year's Eve party that soon descends into chaos. When a huge wave bears down the ship, officers do their best to ensure they save the lives of those on board, but their attempts to turn the ship against the impending wave comes too late.

What follows is a battle for survival by those who managed to keep their lives after the natural disaster, packed full of intense sequences and suspenseful scenes that will leave you on the edge of your seats. If you love your thrillers, this is one for you!

4) Ocean's 11

Though many of us have only ever seen the 2001 adaptation of Ocean's 11, there is actually one filmed and released decades before that is considered by many to be an all-time classic.

The movie stars five of the Rat Pack: Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, and Joey Bishop. The men played a group of World War II 82nd Airborne veterans, who decide to rob five Las Vegas casinos on a single night. That night is New Year's Eve, and, led by Danny Ocean (Sinatra), they plan out their heist with military precision.

Of course, the film wouldn't be exciting if everything was so straight-forward, and so the gang have to battle a number of challenges along the way before a finale that'll have hearts racing. This is an absolute must-see!

3) Money Train

Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson lead this 1995 action flick, which sees Harrelson's character Charlie Robinson plotting to hijack and rob the titular "money train" after losing his job.

His foster brother John (Snipes) - who also worked as a transit cop patrolling the New York subway - initially rejects the idea, but after being treated terribly by his higher-ups, he realises that this could be the perfect opportunity to get some serious cash and leave his miserable role behind for good.

Deciding that the best night to rob the train would be on New Year's Eve (thanks for that inspiration, Ocean's 11!), the pair do their best to put egos aside and get the job done. That's easier said than done, however...

2) 200 Cigarettes

This 1999 comedy boasts an impressive ensemble cast, made up of Ben and Casey Affleck, Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Díaz, Angela Featherstone, Janeane Garofalo, Gaby Hoffman, Kate Hudson, Courtney Love, Jay Mohr, Martha Plimpton, Christina Ricci and Paul Rudd.

A number of unique narratives (all taking place on New Year's Eve in 1981) are followed throughout the movie, showcasing what a bunch of civilians in New York City are getting up to before showing up at a party hosted by Plimpton's character Monica.

Whilst it may not be the first film that springs to mind when you think of NYE, it's certainly one that you should experience at some point!

1) When Harry Met Sally

Played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, Harry Burns and Sally Albright are a pair of unlucky-in-love friends who have known one another since their University days in Chicago. Whilst they've met up at various points in their lives, it's one New Year's Eve party that sees their friendship turn into a mutual attraction for one another.

Part of the charm of When Harry Met Sally comes from the inclusion of older married couples who are interwoven throughout the film, narrating directly to-camera the stories of how they met. Whilst they're all fictional couples, it certainly puts a grin on the faces of those watching.

This is one of the best romantic comedies you could wish to see, so if that's your bag, get it on your to-watch list!
