Music is in the air at education charity FILMCLUB with the launch the new Season of the Week featuring films with a musical theme to celebrate World Music Day on June 21.
What began in Paris, and now celebrated around the globe, World Music Day encourages musicians to get out and perform in the streets. FILMCLUB’s selection of films shows music’s ability to grip and empower - and sometimes even annihilate.
Proving that films about music are not always musicals or feature big dance numbers, FILMCLUB’s World Music Day season is celebratory towards the people who make the music - the musicians themselves!
From the streets of Cuba in the Buena Vista Social Club and the beautifully animated Chico and Rita, to Le Vie En Rose featuring an Oscar-winning turn from Marion Cotillard, chronicling the life of legendary French singer Edith Piaf and her troubled rise to fame from poverty, through to following contestants battle it out in the junior version of the Eurovision Song Contest in Smells Like Teen Spirit, these enlightening and gripping films will have your feet tapping in no time!
So jump to the beat and check out our season of films!
1. La Vie En Rose (12, 2007): Biopic on the life of legendary French singer Edith Piaf and her troubled rise to fame from poverty, an Oscar-winning role for Marion Cotillard.
2. Buena Vista Social Club (U, 1999): Fantastic documentary following the lives and performances of Cuban jazz musicians, who were little known outside of Cuba until the making of the film
3. No One Knows About Persian Cats (12, 2009): Documentary about a group of Iranian musicians which gives insight into everyday life in a Islamic fundamentalist state.
4. Benda Bilili! (PG, 2010): If you're looking for proof that dreams do come true, then this inspirational documentary is it.
5. Control (15, 2007): Biography of the troubled Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.
6. Favela Rising (12, 2005): Documentary about the positive effect an "Afro Reggae" troop has on the slums of Brazil.
7. Sounds Like Teen Spirit (PG, 2009): One of the most entertaining documentaries in years, this follows the 10-15 year-old contestants in the junior version of the Eurovision Song Contest.
8. Wild Style (15, 1982): This 1983 drama has unbelievably terrible acting and a corny plot, but it works as a fantastic documentary about the early days of hip hop.
9. Chico and Rita (15, 2010): Cuba's jazz music scene of the 1940s and 1950s provides a vibrant starting point for this grown-up, animated tale of love and loss.
10. This is Spinal Tap (15, 1984): This mockumentary about the worst (or are they the best?) rock group of all time is a hysterical cult classic.
All these films and thousands more are available to school children and teachers who are members of FILMCLUB to watch, discuss and review in school film clubs
