It’s January, the weather's rubbish and summer seems a long way away…so what better a time to let education charity FILMCLUB whisk you away on a cinematic holiday with a collection of sun-drenched films in this week’s Season of the Week: Sunshine on a Rainy Day.
FILMCLUB, the experts in film for young people, have picked 10 big screen sunny sizzlers to give you a glimpse of a long lost summer, featuring locations from far and near to raise your spirits.
Gorgeous Italian landscapes feature in three of the film choices; the multi Oscar-winning Il Postino tells the tale of Mario, a shy man on a beautiful Italian island who discovers a love for poetry and an equally lovely girl named Beatrice, Baaria, the 2009 Italian autobiographic epic, which recounts life in a Sicilian town from the 1920’s to the 1980’s through the eyes of two lovers, and the Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck classic Roman Holiday, which sees Hepburn star as a fairy-tale princess on a tour around the capital of Europe, and wrings every last drop of charm from its romantic setting of 1950’s Rome.
Beautiful Barcelona provides the backdrop for romantic drama Vicky Cristina Barcelona starring Scarlett Johanasson and Penelope Cruz. With award-winning performances and the enchanting setting of the cultural capital of Spain, this film is sure to shake off the winter blues.
And closer to home, Emily Blunt stars in My Summer of Love, a touching tale of romance set in Yorkshire over the summer holidays.
For viewers who like their summers served with less romance and more bite, Steven Speilberg’s Jaws is a cinematic thriller depicting a summer holiday turned nightmare for the residents of sunny seaside resort of Amity as they battle to save their holidaymakers from a killer shark. But be warned - this film will keep youngsters out of their bath water for weeks to come!
Younger viewers can set sail on a tropical adventure with family classic Swiss Family Robinson, which follows the Robinson family as they learn to live without everyday comforts after being marooned on a dessert island, or sing-a-long with Cliff Richard and friends in the timeless musical Summer Holiday, where the crooner tours across Europe on a London bus during the swinging 60’s.
French comedy Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday – the original inspiration for the Mr Bean character – will delight viewers with the mad-cap adventures of one man’s plight to enjoy his vacation.
Rounding the season off, Five Have A Mystery To Solve provides school holiday scrapes in this 1960s adaptation of Enid Blyton's adventure story.
