Kate Winslet is going to have a busy start to 2014 as she has not one but two films that will be hitting the big screen.
Labor Day has already received praise on the festival circuit this autumn, and it will see Winslet return to her dramatic best. While the Oscar winner did make a brief appearance in comedy Movie 43 at the beginning of 2013, this is really her first major role since CARNAGE.
The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Maynard and has adapted for the big screen by Jason Reitman.
Labor Day also sees Reitman return to the director’s for the first time since Young Adult. Reitman has been behind films such as Juno and Up In The Air, and it is great to see him back at the helm of a movie.
The film sees Winslet team up with Josh Brolin for the first time. Gattlin Griffith, Tobey Maguire, Clark Gregg, J.K. Simmons and James Van Der Beek are also on the cast list.
Labor Day centres on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler (Griffith / Maguire), who struggles to be the man of his house and care for his reclusive mother Adele (Winslet) while confronting all the pangs of adolescence.
On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers (Brolin), a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict.
The events of this long Labor Day weekend will shape them for the rest of their lives.
I have been a big fan of Kate Winslet for many years as she has delivered wonderful performances time and time again. And while we are going to see her in blockbuster Divergent, Labor Day is another role that she can really get her teeth into.
Labor Day is released 7th February.
