We have also reached the top three in our countdown of the Worst Films of 2015 and, I am sorry to say, it is horror movie It Follows that has made it to the number three spot.
I know that everyone called this a 'genre-defining film' and a 'game-changer', but this was a movie that really did leave me really cold. With all of the buzz that was surrounding It Follows, it was a movie that I went to see with huge excitement.
It's fair to say that the horror genre has been a little lacklustre for the last couple of years, but it looked like It Follows was going to change all of that. For me, It Follows was one of the biggest movie disappointments of the year.
I know that I am in the minority when it comes to disliking this movie, but the film did start off well. It has an original and interesting premise and director David Robert Mitchell - who also penned the film's screenplay - really does create a feeling of unease. The first hour is an ok if not terrific watch.
But that feeling of unease never really develops into something that has you on the edge of your seat. Mitchell does all the groundwork in terms of creating an atmosphere but, instead of a terrifying crescendo, it just slowly fades away and the whole film is left more than a little flat.
I think the fact that we also learn very little about who/want is chasing the central character really help aid in it becoming a not very menacing or terrifying villain. From the very beginning, the real danger and horror, for me, is just missing and I didn't have a pang of fear throughout.
The relentless nature of constantly being chased and followed is a truly terrifying one, but it just wasn't executed well here - which is a major shame.
The end of the film, where Jay plans to lure the creature to a swimming pool and kill it, should have been the movie's climax, but it didn't really work out that way. It was a disappointing end to a disappointing film.
I will say that it was nice to see a horror film not rely heavily on special effects and CGI gimmicks to tell the story; we have seen too much of that over the last few years.
It Follows was a movie that did start off well, but this was a premise and a story that could have been explored further so it could deliver so much more. It may be a movie that has had the critics falling over themselves with praise all year, but it was another in a long list of horror disappointments for me. This is not a film that sent a shiver down a spine or had me on the edge of my seat - a major shame.
