The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

2013 may have been a year were we have seen many movies enjoy huge box office success, but  we have also seen some films totally tank over the last twelve months.

We take a look at some of the films that did not perform anywhere near as well as was expected, as well as some of the movies that lost money.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was being tipped as the young adult fiction franchise to rival and replace The Twilight Saga. City of Bones was the first of Cassandra Clare’s novels to be adapted and was hopefully the start of a new series of movies.

Harald Zwart was in the director’s chair, while a great young cast that includes Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower had been assembled. Sadly, the movie was not the rip-roaring success that was expected.

The film failed to win over the critics and struggled even more at the box office. City Of Bones had a budget of $60 million, but made just $76 million worldwide at the end of its theatrical run. While the movie didn’t lose money, it certainly wasn’t the box office smash that was hoped for.

Another movie that struggled at the box office was The Lone Ranger: another Disney vehicle for Johnny Depp, where he could play an oddball character. Depp took on the role of Tonto in the film, while Armie Hammer was on board as The Lone Ranger.

While the movie did make back its production budget of $215 million - it went on to gross $260 million - it was still not the big hit that Disney was predicting.

Biopics always seem to do well with both the critics and at the box office, so DreamWorks should have been quite confident when was released The Fifth Estate. The movie told the story of Julian Assage and Wikileaks, had Benedict Cumberbatch in the leading role and Bill Condon in the director’s chair.

However, the movie was not a success as it made just $6 million at the global box office; a $22 million loss after it cost $28 million to make.

Sylvester Stallone has been a big box office draw over the years, but that was a trend that did not continue this year with Bullet To The Head.

Bullet To The Head was another action film for the actor as he showed the younger generation that he is still the #1 action star.

However, the movie was not a box office success as it grossed just $9 million in the U.S.  The opening weekend in the U.S. was one of the worst opening weekends for a Stallone film.  The movie grossed $23.2 million, nowhere near the $55 million budget.

It seems that the action genre has been a little below par in 2013, not only have the movies struggled at the box office, but they have also been very poor.

Parker is another film that didn’t quite succeed, even with Jason Statham leading the cast list. The movie cost $35 million to make, but only grossed $17 million worldwide.

Steve Carell has enjoyed huge box office success this year with Despicable Me 2 - which has gone on to become one of the biggest grossing movies of the year.

However, not all of Carell’s projects have been a rip-roaring success. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was released at the beginning of the year, but struggled at the box office.

The movie got $30 million to make and yet it only made back $26 million at the end of its theatrical run at the global box office.

With a cast list that included Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta Jones, Broken City should have been a big success. Unfortunately, this talented cast was not enough to bring a rather dull script to life.

It seems that cinema go-ers agreed as the movie make just $19.7 million at the box office in the U.S. By the end of the global theatrical run, the movie had grossed jus over $25 million - it cost $35 million to make.

Other movies that have not performed as well as hoped include R.I.P.D., Jack The Giant Slayer and The Big Wedding.
