TV and movies have always seemed to go along hand in hand with a whole host of our small screen favourites being adapted for our cinema going pleasure.
And this week is not different as hit show The Inbetweeners is brought to the big screen for the very first time with Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas reprising the roles of Will, Jay. Neil and Simon.
So we take a look at some of the TV shows that have found themselves on the big screen over the years.
- The Untouchables
The Untouchables started out as an American crime drama which ran from 1959 to 1963 and was based on the memoir by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley.
The series followed Ness and co as they battled crime in Chicago in the 1930s and starred Robert Stack, Abel Fernandez and Nick Georgiade.
But in 1987 Brian De Palma stepped in and brought the story of the Untouchables vs Al Capone to the big screen.
Starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro the movie was met by critical acclaim and a string of Oscar nominations.
- The Fugitive
The Fugitive was an American drama series that ran from 1963 to 1967 and followed a doctor who is falsely convicted of killing his wife and given the death penalty. But after a train crash on the way to death row Kimble escapes and goes on the run.
The Fugitive is widely regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time and starred David Janssen and Barry Morse.
In 1993 Harrison Ford took over the central role of Kimble in the big screen adaptation that was directed by Andrew Davis.
This time around it was Tommy Lee Jones in hot pursuit in a movie that performed well at the box office and went on to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar while Tommy Lee Jones won Best Supporting Actor.
- Sex and the City
Sex and the City has been one of the most successful TV series of recent years and was based on the Candace Bushnell book of the same name.
Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon the show ran for six series until it was brought to an end in 2004.
But that was not to be the end as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda found themselves on the big screen for the first time in 2008.
The movie was a big hit and grossed in excess of $415 million, holding itself well against the blockbusters of that summer. However a second film failed to do as well with the critics and at the box office.
- Mission Impossible
Before Tom Cruise took on the role of Ethan, Mission Impossible was a hit TV show that ran for seven series.
The show followed a team of American government agents and starred Steven Hill, Peter Graves and Barbara Bain.
But in 1996 Brian De Palma, yes him again, brought it to the big screen with Cruise taking on the central role of Ethan Hunt.
The movie cemented Cruise as an action hero and was a hit at the box office. Sequels followed in 2000 and 2006, Mission: Impossible II being the most successful movie in the franchise.
But his year Cruise is back for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.
- Transformers
Now I will level with you when I heard that Transformers was being adapted into a live action movie I was a little skeptical.
Transformers kicked off as a toy line before expanding to comic book as well as an animated TV series, which many of us watched as we were growing up.
But in 2007 Michael Bay brought the story to the big screen in a movie that combined computer animation with live action.
The film was a massive box office smash as it took in excess of $709 million and made Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox a star.
Two movies have followed and while Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was not a success with the critics fans still flocked to the box office and it was more financially successful that it's predecessor.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon broke $1billion at the global box office this summer.
- Wayne’s World
Wayne's World began life as a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live which starred Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.
The pair reprised their role in 1992 when the sketch became a full length feature film directed by Penelope Spheeris.
The movie marked the feature debut of funnyman Myers and was a critical and commercial hit - nearly twenty years later the movie is still regarded as one of the best comedy films of all time.
However Wayne's World 2 did not do as well.
- Charlie’s Angels
Charlie's Angels was a showed that first hit the small screen in 1976 and ran through to 1981 following three women who worked for a private investigation agency.
The series made stars of Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd in roles that were notoriously given to men at that time.
In 2000 Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu took over the central roles when McG brought the popular series to the big screen.
The movie did well enough to secure a sequel three years later and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle did just as well at the box office.
The Inbetweeners Movie is released 17th August.
