BMW 118i Not As Tame As You Might Think
The BMW 118i slots into the 1 series range between the entry level 116i and the more punchy 120i, the 118i though has more than just a bits of its larger syblings dna. Take for instance the engine this is a detuned version of the two litre valvertronic power plant. So given this the 118i may just prove the pick of the petrol engine models.
Practicality with panache
Unlike the 170 bhp 120i, the 118i has to make do with a mere 143 bhp, although this is still a sizable amount of get up and go.
The 190 Nm of torque isn’t much down on the 120i therefore on the road there isn’t much to choose between the two models both of which utilise BMW’s high precision direct injection technology.
The 120i will make 60 mph from standing in 7.7 seconds and push on to top 139 mph the 118i doesn't get left far behind managing 0 to 60 in 8.7 second, while topping at a mere 9mph less at 130.
Add to this a fuel economy figure of 47.9 mpg at around 6 mpg better than the more powerful car although that small fact will not infuence too many decisions are swung by this factor. Most will just want the best 1 series they can afford.
The SE models feature climate control, 16inch alloy wheels and front fog lamps, advice - don't to upgrade to the 17inch alloys. The car does look a bit meaner with the bigger wheels, the downside is that the rigid sidewalls of the run flat tyres don’t do much for ride comfort.
If the SE is out of your range try the ES which yields more equipment than the standard model for a less than an extra £1,000. While at the top of the range there is the M sport model with its lower spoilers and sills, bigger alloy wheels and firm M sports suspension.
From a womans point of view easy to park, will get the kids to school in comfort, without burning a hole in your wallet. Loads of space for the weekly shop. All that practicality but with panache!
