The Toyota Aygo X is a compact supermini that packs a dose of off-road styling. It’s a crossover in a compact body with unique bi-tone colouring, body cladding, 18-inch alloys all in a statement design. A compact supermini it maybe, but the Aygo X packs a surprisingly spacious interior, is sweet to drive, and a head turner that stands out from the competition.
Inside:
There are clean surfaces, with smart-looking coloured metallic detailing, overall quality is good. The driver is seated higher up than in other superminis, giving good views of the road ahead.
There is a touchscreen as standard, and with that you get a system that’s smooth enough in operation equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In the back headroom and legroom are a bit tight, adults over six-foot may struggle.
Luggage Space:
The boot is a reasonable 231 litres – a 60-litre hike over the previous model which gives the Aygo X the edge over the competition. The rear seats fold down for a total space of 829-litre space - pretty impressive.
Driving:
Powered by a 72hp three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine means the Aygo X tends to be noisy at higher speeds and the CVT transmission is noisier than the manual that we were driving.
In Town:
As the Aygo X is made for the city and town driving you will appreciate the small footprint and direct steering, (three turns of the steering from lock to lock) makes nipping in and out of side streets or weaving through traffic problem free and parking is so easy.
In the country:
On the country roads it’s a fun car to drive, the direct steering comes into its own prroducing excellent grip through tight corners. The suspension smooths out the potholes.
On the Motorway:
The ride was smooth and responsive and when the Aygo X settled down at 70mph it was surprisingly quiet. Although the engine noise was there it wasn’t uncomfortable and with the car sat on those 18-inch wheels wind and tyre noise was negligible. The suspension soaked up most of the bumps very well and is settled to make long distances simple to cover
Performance:
The Aygo X is powered by a 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic that returns 0-60mph in a sedate 14.8 seconds and a speed of 98mph. The fuel economy figure comes in at a very respectable 56.5mpg, emissions are a very good 109g/km CO2 particularly important for the Aygo’s main purpose of town driving where emission levels are so important.
Conclusion
The Toyota Aygo X is powered by a simple 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine which comes with a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic. We had the manual to use which was great to drive and easy to handle. The Aygo X is a great car, completely at home in the city, perfectly happy on the motorways, and a dream to drive on country roads. The perfect mini crossover.
We loved the Aygo X Exclusive it was definitely fit for purpose. A great all round super versatile supermini.
