Saved By The Bell's Lisa Turtle

There are some TV shows that are known for their fashion and little else, and then there are those excruciating programmes where the fashion becomes the focal point, whether it intends to or not.

You know the kind of thing we mean, styles so bad you can't look away, or a hair do so totally backwards you find yourself shouting in frustration at the TV screen.

Well, over the years as the fashion trends have progressed, so has the fashion on our favourite TV shows, and for the most part it has got a hell of a lot better.

You can't help but laugh at some of the dodgy looks sported ten years ago on some of our fave programmes though, but hopefully through their style mistakes and triumphs, we have learnt a few of our own fashion lessons.

We've compiled a list of the best fashion savvy programmes to hit our screens over the years, to see what, if anything, we have learnt from them...

Saved By The Bell: There are no words to describe how amazing this TV show was, and even more ironically the 80s fashion sported back then is now the height of cool. So while we may have laughed at Slater's dodgy quiff and Zac's bleached hair, not to mention Jessie's dodgy shirts and Lisa's penchant for shoulder pads, we'll all be rocking the 80s looks come summer.

Lesson Learned: Never throw anything away, it could come back in fashion one day!

Sweet Valley High: Never have crop tops and biker boots been so in fashion, with twins Jessica and Liz ruling the roost in Sweet Valley. Crazy colour combinations and clashing prints seemed to be the style to be seen in during the mid-nineties, as did bad hair and dark coloured lips.

Lesson Learned: Never dye your hair bleach blonde, unless you have the time and money for its upkeep, and crop tops are not your friend, unless you're a size six.

Friends: Back in the early days it was all about high-waisted Levis, over sized T-shirts, ill-fitting shirts and horrendous suits- and that was just the girls. Over the years, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe went through a series of style disasters, before miraculously becoming fashion queens in the final few seasons.

Lesson Learned: Rachel's work look may well have been in style in 1995, but we'd never get a job in Bloomingdales wearing that olive coloured trench coat and yucky brown suit.

90210: The new kids are too cool for school these days, but hardly groundbreaking when it comes to choosing some unique fashion. Sporting jeans a a T-shirt may well be the way to do laid back glamour in Beverly Hills, but the designer price tag doesn't make it a style statement.

Lesson Learned: Despite having money and a cast who all look impossibly well groomed, this show is still backward fashion wise and doesn't encourage us to take a risk.

Gossip Girl: One of the hippest shows around when it comes to experimenting with fashion looks, and is hugely popular in both the US and UK. Blair is the Queen of preppy cool, while Serena is the hippy Princess of the UES; could they get any cooler? Well, considering it's just been commissioned for a third series, we think so.

Lesson Learned: Wearing a headband gives you power beyond belief, nuff said.
