Vivienne Westwood has decided to ban fur from all the designs in her future collections.

The veteran designer has joined the likes of Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein in banning the use of animal furs after increased pressure on the fashion industry from animal campaigners.

"We have not used fur of any kind in next season's collection and have no plans to use it in the future," a representative for the label told animal rights group PeTA.

Peta have been raising their profile over recent years by getting a celebrities including Sadie Frost and Dita Von Teese to front their campaigns in a bid to persuade the fashion industry to re-think their use of animal skins.

Earlier this year Kylie Minogue and Eva Longoria came under the wrath of the group for sporting a snakeskin bag. The gold Zagliani python bag has become the latest 'it' bag after Kylie was spotted clutching one at a recent Prince concert. Sales of the £1,280 handbag have rocketted over the last month increasing fears about the way it is produced.

According to PETA the way of skinning the snake involves leaving the head of the animal on, and blowing it up with water to make it easier to peel. Somtimes this involves a sanke being left in agony for two days after the skin is removed. Protesters are hoping celebrities would think again if they knew the extent of the cruelty involved
