More than three-quarters of British women would avoid getting injectable lip fillers to avoid lips like Tulisa’s, according to a new survey.
The survey of 1000 women by beauty retailer Escentual.com found that although 63% of women wished they had a fuller pout, the majority would not resort to injectables to attain this.
Although lip injectables are popular among celebrities including Amy Childs and Katie Price, well over half of women said their main reason for steering clear of the cosmetic treatment was the fear of ending up with a swollen and disproportioned looking ‘trout pout’ – as displayed by N-Dubz star Tulisa in her recent court appearance.
Unsurprisingly, nearly all of the women surveyed thought Tulisa was wrong to tamper with her lips – a staggering 96 per cent of women said she looked prettier before the fillers.
Other reasons women gave for avoiding lip fillers were the potential health risks and the hefty costs involved with having to go for regular top-up injections.
Injectable lip fillers – often made from collagen, hyaluronic acid or Alloderm - usually last from several weeks to up to four months before the plumping effects fade and the treatment has to be repeated.
Rather than opting for surgery, over half of women said they had tried make-up tricks to fake a fuller pout. Seventeen-year-old Kylie Jenner, who has in recent months been spotted with suspiciously full lips, has vehemently denied having lip fillers and cites ‘clever make-up’ as the cause for her plumper pout.
Emma Leslie, editor at Escentual.com, said: “It’s definitely possible to create the illusion of plumper looking lips without having to resort to injectables.”
“Applying lip liner just outside your natural lip line in a shade close to or slightly darker than your lip colour works wonders. Finish off with a moisturising lip colour in a light or natural hue – darker lipsticks can sometimes make lips appear smaller than they are.”
“Another great tip is to add a touch of pearlescent highlighter to the centre of your lips and Cupid’s bow.”
“There are a range of highly effective products out there specifically targeted at creating fuller lips. The DHC Revitalising Moisture Strips (£9.50, Escentual.com) in particular are designed to provide a natural plumping effect to the lips, by feeding the delicate area around the mouth with nutrients.
“We’ve seen a massive 86% increase in sales of the DHC strips in the past few months – stars like Kylie Jenner have made full lips very desirable at the moment.”
