Tips on how to shampoo your hair

It may sound silly but do you know how to properly shampoo your hair?

Trichologist, Mandy Baldwin shares her knowledge and tips on how to ensure that you properly shampoo your hair and end up with beautiful locks.

Here are her tips:

1.            Gently brush the hair thoroughly

2.            Soak the hair and scalp in warm water moving the hair at the same time to ensure coverage.

3.            Apply a 50p size amount of shampoo to palm of one hand then spread over both hands. Then apply the shampoo to front, back, and both sides of the scalp.

4.            Gently massage the shampoo into the hair roots and scalp in a circularly movement (Petrissage) working from the front to back for around 1 minute. This will stimulate blood flow to the scalp whilst loosening debris. Then gently run the fingers down the lengths of the hair without wringing or pulling at the hair.

5.            Rinse the shampoo from the hair and scalp for a few minutes ensuring all traces of the shampoo are removed. Any residue left in the hair can leave the hair dull and scalp itchy.

6.            Repeat - Shampoo again as above.

7.            Rinse for the second time, a little longer this time with a cooler water until the hair is squeaky clean.

8.            Apply the chosen conditioner to the mid lengths and ends of the hair, then gently using your fingers in a comb like movement work the conditioner through the hair.

9.            Finally rinse with cooler water until all residues is removed.

10.          Towel dry the hair using a blotting motion, no rubbing squeezing or wringing to avoid damaging the hair.

11.          Once the hair is towel dried use a wide tooth comb to avoid the hair stretching when wet, as this could cause the hair to break. Brushing wet hair can also increase the chance of damaging the hair cuticles and eventually the hair shaft.

12.          Apply a heat protecting mousse or lotion to the hair.

13.          Blow dry or natural dry.

14.          Finish using a natural soft bristle brush which is very gentle on the hair and will help smooth the hair cuticles whilst increasing shine and lustre.

It's also important to ensure that you eat the right diet to maintain healthy locks, here Mandy explains the types of vitamins that are essential for your hair.

Diet

Drink plenty of water and maintain a well-balanced diet of essential nutrients. Protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals are all essential to promote good health of the scalp and hair. If your diet is not great consider taking multivitamins and minerals that include important nutrients for the hair such as B-6 found in potatoes and bananas and B-12 found in dairy, meat, fish and poultry. Another would be folic acid found in citrus fruits and various fortified and whole grain products. A particular mineral favorite of mine is Selenium found in seafood, brazil nuts and bananas. Selenium is great in treating itchy dry scalps and fungal conditions as well as improving the health of the hair. Taking omega-3 fatty acids a type of polyunsaturated fat found in fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel is great to promote a healthy scalp and hair. It aids cell growth and blood circulation to the scalp essential to the hairs follicles. Omega-3 will also aid dry hair and scalps conditions which is a must for winter hair.
