Cannes kicked off yesterday with a whole host of A-Listers taking to the red carpet.
There was plenty of beautiful dresses on show, which I've discussed here, but now onto the hair.
Nicole Kidman's Christian Dior dress was not only my favourite of the evening, her hair was too.
She chose a beautiful sculptural style ponytail to complete her look.
Jason Cocking, celebrity hairstylist and director at Lisa Shepherd London, said of it:
“The quiff has certainly become the standout do of the red carpet season. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Anne Hathaway donned her peroxide blonde look and yesterday at the opening night of Cannes Nicole Kidman gave it her own bold twist.
"The almost futuristic hair style, which was slicked at the sides and voluminous at the top, gave Kidman quite a severe look. This modern day Mohican was perfectly softened by her subtle makeup and ultra feminine pink dress, keeping the whole look slick but elegant."
If you want to get the look then follow these tips.
Darren Ambrose, 3 times winner of the British Hairdressing Awards Avant Garde category tells us how to copy Nicole Kidman’s statement quiff:
“This super modern look shows how more avant garde styles can translate to the red carpet. Leave the top section of your hair loose and using some gel smooth the section underneath and pin tightly in the middle of the head. Back comb the top section and with lots of hairspray smooth it down the centre of the head, securing with pins underneath. Finish with a clear band at the nape of the neck and straighten the tail for a sleek finish."
Carey Mulligan's overall look was very simplistic, she paired her plain blush Christian Dior gown with loose, straight hair.
Jason shares his views: “The simplicity of Carey Mulligan’s hairstyle yesterday evening was in perfect contrast to her glitzy 1920s styling in the Great Gatsby film. The platinum colour freshened up her demure look, while keeping it very sleek and totally on trend with her centre parting and midi length.”
Cindy Crawford paired a big, bouncy blow dry with her white Roberto Cavalli gown.
Rae Palmer, former Southern Hairdresser of the Year and blow-drying pro shares tips for Cindy’s big bouncy hair:
“Cindy shows that glamorous hair is all about volume, and the best and easiest way to achieve this is to leave conditioner away from the roots. Then before styling apply volume spray to roots and blow dry, first with your head upside down and then side to side. When the hair is nearly dry finish smoothing with a Mason Pearson or soft bristle brush.”
Whilst Julianne Moore left us all envious with her stunning her colour.Organic Colour Specialist Karine Jackson shares her expert advice to go red like Julianne:
“This is a beautiful red that looks great against Julianne’s porcelain skin. To get the same effect I would use the ‘golden diamond technique’. This involves applying slices of colour through the hair that are cut like a diamond, taking alternate shades of red and gold for a really soft, natural finish. Reds tend to fade really quickly so after care is important – I recommend the Status Quo range of Shampoos and Conditioners from Organic Colour Systems as they really help improve colour retention."
