Keep the kids entertained and build a tree house in the garden

Sick of your children sitting in front of the television, computer or video game? It's time that you done something to change this.

New statistics reveals that 45 per cent of parents in the UK have less than five hours a week to play and bond with their children.

This perhaps goes a way to explaining why children find easy ways to keep themselves entertained.

Only 31 per cent of UK parents take part in educational play and lifeskill development such as cooking, sewing or DIY with their children, despite nearly all being concerned about their children's lack of practical skills and that this will lead to highers costs later in life when they have to call people in to do these jobs.

As 93 per cent of parents think it is important to pass life skills down to the next generation, Bosch Power Tools is launching a campaign to encourage families to 'build and bond' by building a tree house in the back garden or even sketching a tree house design.

Sue Palmer, a specialist in child development and author of Toxic Childhood says:

"When parents take the time to invovle their children in 'everyday' activities like cooking, DIY and mending clothes, they're not just handing them important lifeskills that will stand the kids in good stead in the future, they're also showing them value and love. This sort of 'family time' is vital to a child's feelings of self-worth. It used to happen naturally in most families, but modern lifestyles make it more difficult."
