Weight loss means we could lose friends too

Dieting means we lose more than weight when we embark on a healthy eating plan, research shows that we lose friends too.

The survey shows that the average Brit loses two friends for every stone of weight lost during a diet, with ‘jealousy’ cited as the main reason for the fallings out or distance between friends.

The survey found that weight loss had a significant positive impact upon their lives, with people left feeling more confident, gaining a more active social life and have more energy.

But then when asked about the negative effects had experienced as a result of losing weight, revealing that over four fifths of people had ‘lost friends’ during the course of their weight loss journey, with just under a third of dieters claiming they ‘missed junk food and drinks’ and a fifth stating that they ‘received unwelcome attention’ since slimming down.

In order to find out more about the impact dieting has on Britons’ social circles, the survey asked “If you indicated that you have lost friends during your weight loss journey, please indicate how many friends you have lost.” The vouchercloud team calculated the average friends lost per stone of weight loss and found that the average dieter sheds two friends alongside every stone.

The same respondents were then asked to disclose what they thought was the main reason why they had lost friends during their diet and the most popular reason was revealed to be ‘jealousy’, followed closely by ‘a change in lifestyle/grew apart due to diet’ and ‘broken relationships’.

Matthew Wood of vouchercloud.com made the following comment:

“It seems that weight loss is a good way to find out who your true friends are! It’s unfortunate that so many friendships are broken along the way, especially when you would expect your friends to congratulate you and celebrate with you, but good riddance! You don’t want diet saboteurs in your social circle, anyway. £241 may seem expensive as a diet spend, but it’s great the Brits put themselves first and reap the benefits, as shown with these results. They should pat themselves on the back for not letting anything stop them!”
