A number of food chains including Burger King and Pizza Hut will display the amount of calories their products contain later this month, as part of a government backed scheme.
So far, 17 firms have signed up to the plan, set out by the Food Standards Agency, giving consumers more information on what they are eating.
Similar to the labelling system introduced to New York last year, restaurant chains will outline calorie information on menus, boards or shelves.
The scheme was decided upon after a poll of 2,000 people by the FSA in 2008, found 85 per cent were in favour of the displays.
FSA chief executive Tim Smith said: "We are pleased that such a diverse range of companies has agreed to work with us.”
"Our aim is to ensure that consumers have better information so they can make informed choices to improve their diet when eating out."
