New development in cancer research?

This breakthrough information could lead onto producing drugs that block the gene and stop cancer from spreading any further.

Doctor Andrew Chantry, lead author of UEA's School of Biological Sciences said:

"The challenge now is to identify a potent drug that will get inside cancer cells and destroy the activity of the rogue gene. This is a difficult but not impossible task, made easier by the deeper understanding of the biological processes revealed in this study."

It has been predicted that if a drug was made to block the Rogue Gene it could stop the most vicious of cancers from spreading such as: breast, brain, colon and skin cancer.

The discovery was stumbled upon when researchers were investigating natural cancer cell inhibitors called: "Smads".

The investigation has been funded by Association of International Cancer Research with support from the Big C Charity and the British Skin Foundation.
