Yo! Sushi in the Arndale Centre Manchester is ideally located right in the centre of the shopping mall for some post or mid shopping respite.
We were served by Tim and Jasmine who advised us on the new summer menu and helped us pick the latest dishes from the conveyor belt- as to the layman- a lot of the dishes can look very similar.
The menu has had a redesign and it's much easier. Rather than all the dishes being listed in a book- they are now listed on a paper placemat so you can see everything at once. The cold is on one side and the hot is on the reverse- simple! There is also a paddle shaped menu of drinks for the weekend or beverages suitable for working lunches so everything is there for you to see- no complications or hassle- just fast and convenient dining.
Tim even circled the dishes we ordered so we could ask for another if we liked it that much!
There is plenty for vegetarians and meat eaters alike;
Sunomono Salad- Traditional Japanese palate cleanser - refreshing cucumber, authentic wakame seaweed, citrus ponzu, sprinkled with white sesame. The closest thing to compare this seaweed dish to is cabbage, but it's nothing like what you would have on your Sunday roast. The citrus dressing gave it a tangy flavour and the sesame seeds- an extra bite- who ever said that salads were boring?!
Surumi, Wakame and Cucumber Salad- If you are a little put off by your fish in a large slice, and then this is the one for you. The fish is broken apart and scattered over the top of the salad, so it looks more subtle. The perfect dish if you don't want to fill up on rice.
Albacore Tuna and Truffle Nigiri- Pure heaven for fish fans, two tender pieces of black pepper seared white tuna, served on lightly vinegared sushi rice, sprinkled with Japanese 7 pepper shichimi, white truffle citrus ponzu and scattered with mixed herbs. This was a very flavourful dish- the pepper offered a kick to this subtle tasting fish.
Albacore Tuna Tataki & Truffle Ponzu- A sophisticated addition to the menu, this plate combines thinly sliced, black pepper seared white tuna, drizzled in white truffle citrus ponzu, Japanese 7 pepper shichimi and scattered with mixed herbs. The citrus drizzle was the perfect accompaniment against the sharpness of the pepper.
Japanese Seabass Ceviche- This popular seafood classic contains succulent Japanese seabass, served with cucumber, pickles, red onion, coriander and cherry tomatoes, topped off with jalapeños for an extra kick! The melon cooled down the spiciness of the jalapenos giving it a refreshing edge and an unusual ingredient for a salad.
Yuzu Cured Salmon Salad- An eye catching vibrant yuzu marinated salmon, served with crunchy cucumber, dill and pickled red onion. This was fresh and simple- if you are not a fan of sauces or drizzles then this is just a really plain, yet tasty slice of fish.
Beef Curry Ramen- All the delicious flavours of YO!'s classic ramen! Tender beef, vibrant vegetables, a choice of ramen noodles or rice, in a fragrant curry broth with a dash of garlic chilli sesame oil. We had one of each- I would recommend the rice is you are not good with chop sticks as you can eat it with just a spoon. Combining all the best bits of a broth and a curry, this was a much lighter alternative to a firm British favourite. And it's lactose free- ideal for if you have been craving curry and couldn't have it because of the creamy sauce.
Tim, Jasmine and manager Kieron were all really helpful and knowledgeable about the new menu choices- which made our experience a lot easier and enjoyable.
On a Saturday lunch time, after the chaos of tackling the Manchester crowds it was a welcome rest with some good food and plenty of water to keep our strength up for the afternoon.
