Earlier this month, we urged our readers to think of the women and children out there who would be spending Christmas in a refuge centre and organise their own fundraiser/donation drive with work, friends or family. We hope you were inspired to do something charitable, and in the mean time, here's how we got on with our own project.
Just to prove that even a small group of people with a limited budget really can make a difference, we ended up with a car-load of donations for the Leeds Women's Aid refuge last week which will go a long way to making Christmas comfortable and joyous for those who have nothing.
Mother and baby products company Mum and You generously donated two boxes of biodegradable baby wipes for our own donation drive (that's 24 packets altogether), and we were able to collect a sizeable haul of cosmetics, toiletries, clothes and other essentials from friends and family.
While our grand total was a rather modest £60, we were still able to purchase 12 large towels and 20 brand new pillowcases for the centre. That's why it's so important to give any amount of money where you can; you wouldn't believe how far a few quid can stretch.
For destitute people, they have had no choice but to live off mere pennies, while the average person spends more than £900 on food, drinks and presents over the festive period. We're not trying to make you feel guilty about splurging over Christmas, but as this is a time for giving, we hope to inspire you to take some time out to help the needy.
