In a perfect world we would never have disagreements with our partners, but we all know that even the most solid relationships have tiffs every now and then.

Arguing about chores is quite common in relationships

Arguing about chores is quite common in relationships

The team at www.hillarys.co.uk conducted a study as part of ongoing research into Britons’ home lives, to find out what British couples argue about the most - and it seems that household chores are a common problem within relationships.

The majority of respondents admitted that arguing with their other half over chores occured at least once a week.

Asked about the specific chores that created arguments, the following 10 chores caused the most arguments:

  1. Doing the dishes/loading the dishwasher - 79%
  2. Wiping down the counters - 68%
  3. Ironing - 61%
  4. Making the bed - 57%
  5. Vacuuming - 54%
  6. Doing the laundry - 43%
  7. Cleaning the toilet - 36%
  8. Dusting/polishing - 23%
  9. Cleaning the shower/bath - 17%
  10. Clearing out the fridge - 10%

When asked how these arguments had negatively affected their relationship, 52% admitted they had slept in a separate bed because of them and a further 23% said they have had to leave the house to ‘cool off’.

Finally, when asked if disagreements over chores had ended previous relationships, 1 in 12 stated they had.

Tara Hall, spokesperson for www.hillarys.co.uk, made the following comments:

“Running a household and holding down a job and other commitments can be really difficult, so it’s always helpful to have another person doing their fair share. I don’t think it’s overly surprising how many arguments this causes between couples, but it’s interesting to see which jobs cause the most issues and how they affect relationships.”
