"I came running in. I immediately started doing CPR. I felt a tiny heart beat."

Simon Monjack has opened up about the morning Brittany Murphy passed away, revealing he could feel the actress' heart pulsing as he desperately tried to revive her.

Monjack, who married the Clueless star in 2007, has been in mourning since the 32 year old suffered a cardiac arrest at her Hollywood Hills home on 20 December (09).

And he admits he is still haunted by the moment he tried in vain to bring Murphy back to life on their bathroom floor.

The star's body was discovered by her mum Sharon, who then shouted out for Simon. He desperately tried to revive his wife but she died in his arms.

He tells the Daily Beast, "I came running in. I immediately started doing CPR. I felt a tiny heart beat. I was pushing with the heel of my hand.

"And every second I pushed, I felt my hand become stronger and her heart weaker. And then it stopped. And I kept pushing. She died in my arms. I knew she was dead...

"I hope no one ever has to go through what I did - to lose the love of your life in front of your eyes. It was all a surreal nightmare."

Murphy's cause of death has been deferred until the results of a toxicology report are completed.
