Brittany Murphy’s life and death are set to be explored in a new HBO documentary series.
The ‘Clueless’ star passed away in 2009 at the age of 32 from pneumonia and combined drug intoxication, and after her husband Simon Monjack died less than a year later of the same cause, speculation began to spread about the circumstances of Brittany’s death, which was officially ruled as an accident.
And now, the actress’ life is set to become the subject of a two-part documentary series coming to HBO’s streaming service HBO Max.
According to a press release, the docuseries will present "an in-depth, intimate character portrait” of Brittany and will delve into the "mysterious circumstances" around her death with the help of new interviews with those close to the ‘8 Mile’ actress and archival footage.
Cynthia Hill will direct the series, and said in a statement: "I agreed to do this film because I think it's a shame that Brittany's promising life and career has been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death. I think it's important to celebrate Brittany's talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon's deaths."
Whilst Jennifer O’Connell, the executive vice president of non-fiction and live-action family programming at HBO Max, added: “Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story. Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy’s life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation.”
No release date for the two-part series, which also doesn’t have a title, has been announced as of the time of writing.
The suspicious details surrounding her death were previously explored last year in the Investigation Discovery documentary ‘Brittany Murphy: An ID Mystery’ and in the controversial Lifetime movie ‘The Brittany Murphy Story’, which was denounced by the star's father.
